Consumer behavior has changed drastically over the years. They’re hanging out on their mobile devices these days. While that may not be ground breaking information to you, it is something you should pay attention to as an online retailer.

Since your customer is accessing your store differently nowadays than ever before, it’s important to identify exactly how they’re behaving online. That will allow you to purposefully target your audience.

Three things to know about today’s consumer behavior:

1. The closest reach.

Think about it, when you’re seeking the answer to a question, you reach for the nearest device, right? That’s how your consumer is behaving. Instead of the user hanging out on their desktops all day, they’re more likely to seek the information out on their mobile device. Keep in mind, 49%  of internet users still utilize a standard computer, it’s just more likely that the closest device is a mobile phone.

What this means for you: make sure your site is mobile optimized. Connecting with your customers where they already hang out is huge.

2. Instant gratification trumps brand.

Consumers are spending less time online in general. Since most are surfing the web from their mobile devices, their online sessions have shortened by 18%. That means users are seeking fast information and solutions. Whoever meets their needs fastest, wins.

What this means for you: use your analytics to track exactly who your customer is, where they’re spending their time, and what they’re looking for. Use that information to make sure they’re able to find you exactly where they’re looking.

3. Craving intuition.

Thanks to things like autocorrect, users expect their online experience to be intuitive. Basically, users are more likely to connect with relevant information based on who they are, where they are, and what they like.

What this means for you: Again, rely on your analytics here. Knowing who your customer is, what they want, and where they are will allow for you to predict their movements. Showing up where they need you without them having to seek you out has proven to be beneficial to business.
