It’s safe to say that as an online business owner, you’ve likely heard about Google Adwords. With Google’s ad network, online retailers can put their ads on search results pages, youtube videos, and partner websites. Being familiar with Google Adwords is great, but knowing what to do with the network is even better.

It’s important to note, no other ad network works faster. In under five minutes, your ad can appear on the first page of google search results./

Getting Started with Google Adwords

Visit adwords.google.com to get your account set up. The sign up process is simple, and Google offers great support if you have any questions along the way. Once your all signed up, you’re ready to start creating your ads.

It’s important that you understand each component to the ad template so you can prepare advertisements that will convert to sales.

Your Headline is the most important piece of your advertisement.

This is the first line of your ad, and it will appear in blue hypertext. Your headline should grab attention and be intriguing. The goal of your headline is to encourage your potential customer to pay attention to your advertisement and click through.

You can provide a few different descriptions to test interest.

Your description should be brief but informative. This is your opportunity to engage with your potential customer. Give them a reason to click through to your site.

Your Display URL is simple and straight forward.

This is your web address. Don’t worry, though. Your Display URL does not have to match the destination URL of your advertisement. If you intend to send your potential customers to a specific section of your website or a special offer page, that’s totally fine. The Display URL will still be the simple address to your website. www.yourwebsitehere.com

Starting Small is Key!

It’s easy to get overzealous and find yourself in a cycle pointless spending. No one likes wasting money, so listen up.

As you’re getting started, know that you’ll be doing a lot of testing. In order to track ad success, it’s best to start with a few products that you know will move fairly easily without much work on your end. Go ahead and pick a few keywords and create a handful of different ads for each product.

Create Groups.

For each product you sell, create an ad group. You want to be very specific here. For example, if your business sells boots, create an ad group for “hiking boots” and “rain boots.”

Variety is crucial.

You should create at least two ads per group. Testing these ads against each other is a key element in scaling and improving your profit.

Avoid the overwhelm. When you start with just a few groups and a few keywords, it’ll be much easier for you to manage your campaign and test the results. It’s tempting to go big right out of the gates, but keeping it reeled in at first will prevent you from wasting money and allow you to get a focused understanding of how well each ad performs.

Shopify has partnered with Google Adwords

Shopify wants to help your business get noticed. Once you’ve signed up to use Shopify, you should have received an email offering a $100 Google Adwords credit when you spend $25. If you can’t find the email, don’t worry. The offer should also be on your Shopify dashboard.
